Violin Lesson Basics

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or you've been playing forever, the violin is an extraordinary instrument deeply rooted in a rich historical tradition. Its captivating sound and expressive capabilities have enthralled musicians and audiences for centuries. At Musicologie, we understand the allure of the violin and are committed to providing exceptional violin lessons tailored to your unique aspirations and skill level. Our experienced teachers possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise, enabling them to guide you on a fulfilling journey as you make the strings of the violin an integral part of your daily life.

The Suzuki Curriculum

For beginners embarking on their violin journey, we have carefully curated a curriculum that sets a solid foundation for your musical development. You will begin with two fundamental books: Suzuki Violin School 1 and Essential Elements Book 1. These two acclaimed resources have stood the test of time, catering to both children and adults alike. The Suzuki Violin School, a renowned method pioneered by Shinichi Suzuki, emphasizes the nurturing of musical talent through a supportive and immersive learning environment. With a focus on ear training and developing a keen sense of musicality, the Suzuki method encourages students to learn by ear before introducing musical notation. This approach fosters a natural and intuitive understanding of music, allowing beginners to progress at their own pace while cultivating a deep connection with the instrument.

Essential Elements

In conjunction with the Suzuki Violin School, Essential Elements Book 1 acts as a valuable companion, providing a comprehensive introduction to violin technique and music theory. Its progressive structure ensures a systematic and thorough grasp of essential skills such as proper bowing technique, finger placement, note reading, and rhythmic accuracy. With engaging exercises, delightful melodies, and interactive online resources, Essential Elements Book 1 ensures an engaging and enjoyable learning experience, laying a strong groundwork for future musical growth.

Violin Lessons for Advanced Players

Throughout your journey as an intermediate or advanced violinist, our teachers will introduce you to a diverse range of musical genres, techniques, and repertoire. From classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions, you will have the opportunity to explore different musical styles that resonate with your artistic vision. Additionally, our instructors will delve deeper into advanced violin techniques, refining your bowing control, vibrato, shifting, intonation, and phrasing. Together, we will unlock the secrets of musical expression, allowing your violin to become an extension of your emotions and creativity.

Our Philosophy Of Education

We are driven by a set of unifying principles that guide every lesson, every class, and every interaction.

We Start Early

Research shows the earlier you start, the more lifetime benefits you receive from studying music.

We Teach Life Skills

Music is awesome! It teaches so many things: emotional intelligence, discipline, self-awareness, motor skills, dexterity and more.

We Teach the Process of Learning

We focus on the process rather than the product, facilitating discovery rather than dictating information. We teach how to learn, not just what to learn.

Our Responsibility

We know a student's success is our responsibility. It's our job to make lessons engaging, fun, and easy to be excited about.

We Believe in Immersion + Exploration

All our lessons and classes are experiential and immersive, fun and exciting!

We Assume Good Intentions

We grow the trust, mutual respect and confidence of our students by assuming good intentions from everyone.

We Encourage Mistakes

Making mistakes is what learning is. You try something, make mistakes, and try again. We encourage mistakes so our students are excited to take risks and try new things.

Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to have total confidence that Musicologie Westerville is the right place for you or your child to start, or continue your musical journey. So we've collected the most frequently asked questions about our music lessons, our programs, and what it's like learning music at Musicologie.

What is the Musicologie Method™?

The Musicologie Method™ is rooted in two things: a safe environment, and education through play. Research tells us these two elements are key components of the way everyone learns, from kids through adults.

In music lessons, a safe environment means a place where you feel free to be who you are, encouraged to play the music you enjoy, and excited to try new things. Education through play means having fun playing your instrument! That's why it's called playing music! We use games and strategies to help our music students make serious progress while enjoying the process.

What ages does Musicologie teach?

We teach all ages. Many of our students are between the ages of 5 and 12, but we teach toddlers and we teach many adults, too! Our toddler music class is called Musicologie Junior and starts at 6 months. Private lessons start at 5. We also have a rock band class called Rockstars where students ages 7+ learn to be rock stars and play at local venues!

We also have member workshops, open mics, and concerts for all our students, including adults! At Musicologie Westerville, not only can you learn an instrument from an amazing, friendly, certified teacher, but you can meet other musicians and join a community of music explorers!

How do I sign up for lessons?

Get started here by answering a few questions. We'll match you with a teacher and find a time that works for ongoing lessons. The first lesson is called an assessment lesson.

What's a lesson membership?

A lesson membership is how you sign up for your weekly lesson or class at Musicologie. Your membership fee is billed monthly. The price depends on which lessons or classes you're enrolled in.

Can I do lessons every other week?

Sure, we offer drop-in lessons for students who can't commit to a weekly lesson.

What if I start in the middle of the month?

You will be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days in the month and then you’ll go into our automated system and be billed on the 1st of each month for the upcoming month.

How do I withdraw from lessons?

To withdraw from lessons, you must give 30 days advance notice by filling out our online exit form. This is the only way to withdraw. Contact us for the exit form.

What curriculum does Musicologie use?

We know that you'll stay more engaged by learning music you love and you'll grow faster by using what you've learned in your lessons in performances. We'll take our own Musicologie Method, along with traditional method books like Suzuki, Alfred's, Faber, etc., and combine that with contemporary music you're excited about with the goal of performing in one of our ensembles, group classes, or at one of our concerts.

Do I need my own instrument?

Not for your first lesson. We have instruments at our studios you can use for the first few lessons. But after that you'll want to get your own instrument for practice at home. Your teacher will help you pick out the right one. We also have open practice hours so you can come in and use instruments and practice rooms at Musicologie during the week.

If you do have your own instrument, you should definitely bring it with you, as long as it's easily portable - leave your piano and drums at home

What's an Assessment lesson?

An assessment lesson is what we call your first lesson. Don't worry, it's not a test! You'll come in, meet your teacher, talk about your goals, go through our policies and develop an individual curriculum. Every student does it regardless of age or ability. For very young students, an assessment is also a chance to see if they're ready for private lessons.

What are Musicologie's prices?

Each of our studios may have different prices, so get started here to learn more!

Can I reschedule a lesson if I can't come?

Of course! Here's how it works:

  1. Log into your account at Musicologie.com

  2. Find the lesson you want to change and select 'cancel' or 'reschedule' at least 24 hours before the lesson. Musicologie Junior and Accelerated Labs can be canceled or rescheduled up to 30 minutes before the class.

  3. The canceled lesson will remain in your account to reschedule at any point in the future.

  4. If you withdraw from lessons, you can no longer reschedule any lessons you cancelled.

  5. If you re-enroll, any previously cancelled lessons will still be available in your account.

How do I pay for lessons?

When you sign up for lessons, your credit card or debit card will be automatically debited a flat fee each month on the 1st of the month. To withdraw, you need to provide us with 30-days notice by filling out a withdrawal form. Contact your teacher for the form.

Does Musicologie offer refunds?

Musicologie cannot offer refunds for any missed or unused lessons.
