How Music Lessons Work
At Musicologie Westerville, most of what we do is private lessons and music is one of our main focuses. The music is an amazing, magical instrument. It’s the perfect place for most students to start. Music teaches technique and dexterity, theory and note reading, and provides a simple, linear road map of how music works. Once you have that foundation, you can take it anywhere: from impressive classical pieces, to your favorite pop song, to adding another instrument to your resume. Music lessons are absolutely the best way for every music lover to immerse themselves in music.
How old does my child need to be for music lessons?
We have a rule of thumb: If your child is excited about playing music now, they should start now. Most music students can start as young as four years old. For kids younger than four who are excited about music, we have Musicologie Junior. Many of our teachers specialize in early childhood music education. They have the skills, patience and demeanor to help young students grow.
What about adult beginners?
Yes! We love adults who are up for the challenge of learning to play a instrument. It's hard work but so rewarding. And it won't take as long as you think to be able to play your favorite songs! We'll help guide you towards your goals and won't make you do endless scales or theory exercises if that's not what you're into.
Lessons For Experienced Music Players
What about lessons for experienced music players? If you have played before, you probably have a good idea of what you want to work on. We'll match you with one of our advanced music teachers. Some have doctorates and decades of experience teaching at the collegiate level. Some have masters degrees in music pedagogy or have toured professionally as jazz sidemen. We offer a world-class, university level music education.

Your First Music Lesson at Musicologie Westerville
The first step is to attend your first music lesson. You can sign up online, or contact us at 614-918-7428. You can attend your lesson online over video, or in person at the Westerville studio at 1190 County Line Road, Westerville, OH 43081. We call the first lesson an assessment. But don't worry - it's not a test! It's a chance for us to get to know you, what your goals are and how best to help you achieve what you want. Plus it's a chance for you to get to know us!
Our Studio
At the studio you'll meet our Community Manager and your teacher who will guide you through process. You'll receive a welcome folder with prices and policies, a practice guide and a practice log. You'll spend about 30 minutes getting set up, learning about Musicologie, talking to you teacher about your goals and playing your music. Your teacher will recommend a curriculum for you, and then, you'll sign up for ongoing voice lessons. You can choose from 30, 45 or 60 minute private lessons. You can also join a band through our RockStars® program. Then, start practicing!

Musicologie is an excellent resource for anyone looking to learn or develop their musical skills with voice and/or instruments. My daughter's voice & piano instructor, Nicholas, is very caring, patient and knowledgeable about singing and playing. Her rock band instructor Nico does a great job of helping the band create while learning. Through Musicologie, my daughter's confidence as a singer has shown from weekly rehearsals to periodic performances (for both musicologie and her school). The supportive atmosphere of Musicologie is one of a kind! Highly recommended!

My 5yo grandson received a guitar and on-going guitar lessons for Xmas, and he had his first lesson this week at Musicologie Westerville. His instructor, Patrick, immediately made him at ease and the lesson was a hit. Sebastian came out of the lesson excited to practice and go back next week. Patrick was knowledgeable and he is already building a relationship with his new student! Very positive and great experience for the student and his Nona. Thanks Patrick!

We have had a great experience with Musicologie! My oldest kids (ages 9 and 11) have taken piano lessons for nearly 3 years and grown tremendously in their skill and confidence. Their needs are very different - one with a natural ear, the other with more technical interest - and their independent teachers foster their needs perfectly. I appreciate being in a studio with multiple teachers rather than 1 private piano teacher. We were offered multiple options and each kid found a great fit.

My daughter has been part of musicology for over 6 years. We started in Westerville and love our teacher so much (shout out Miss Rene!) that we moved our classes to the Grandview location to continue piano classes with her as a teacher. My son is four years younger and is choosing the drums for his lessons. The musicology admin and teachers have been great. They are accommodating and friendly!

I've been taking music lessons at Musicologie Westerville for almost a year now and my teacher Regan is AMAZING. She's very flexible, understanding, kind and teaches me in a way that I find engaging and fun. I have taken both voice and piano lessons with her and we have switched from time to time with ease. She makes you want to learn more and be consistent but doesn't put you down if you haven't been able to practice as much as you should have for whatever reason. She never makes you feel like you have failed when you make mistakes (even if they are the most basic ones) and encourages you the entire way. The atmosphere at Musicologie is also great as well, every single person I have interacted with who works at Musicologie are the nicest, kindest people and they always have a smile on their faces. I wouldn't think about going anywhere else for music lessons and have referred friends here. I definitely feel like I get more than my moneys worth and though prices have risen a little bit because of the economy, I don't think that the lessons are overpriced for what you're getting. There are many opportunities to perform for/in front of the community, little contests, and even music groups (choir and band) that you can join for no extra cost! I absolutely love Musicologie and recommend it to anyone looking for any kind of music lessons.

I am an adult student and I’ve been taking vocal and piano lessons for almost 3 years now with Liz, and it has been great! Liz is very knowledgable and she tailors the lesson based on my progress so that I can continue to get better without any frustration, but still provides enough challenges needed to facilitate improvement. I truly enjoyed every class and look forward to more in the future. I’ve met some other staff during the spring and winter concert and they are all very nice and encouraging for students! I’m glad that I’ve joined the school and would recommend it to anyone who’s thinking about starting a journey in music!

What is the Musicologie Method™?
The Musicologie Method™ is rooted in two things: a safe environment, and education through play. Research tells us these two elements are key components of the way everyone learns, from kids through adults.
In music lessons, a safe environment means a place where you feel free to be who you are, encouraged to play the music you enjoy, and excited to try new things. Education through play means having fun playing your instrument! That's why it's called playing music! We use games and strategies to help our music students make serious progress while enjoying the process.
What ages does Musicologie teach?
We teach all ages. Many of our students are between the ages of 5 and 12, but we teach toddlers and we teach many adults, too! Our toddler music class is called Musicologie Junior and starts at 6 months. Private lessons start at 5. We also have a rock band class called Rockstars where students ages 7+ learn to be rock stars and play at local venues!
We also have member workshops, open mics, and concerts for all our students, including adults! At Musicologie Gahanna, not only can you learn an instrument from an amazing, friendly, certified teacher, but you can meet other musicians and join a community of music explorers!
How do I sign up for lessons?
Get started here by answering a few questions. We'll match you with a teacher and find a time that works for ongoing lessons. The first lesson is called an assessment lesson.
What's a lesson membership?
A lesson membership is how you sign up for your weekly lesson or class at Musicologie. Your membership fee is billed monthly. The price depends on which lessons or classes you're enrolled in.
Can I do lessons every other week?
Sure, we offer drop-in lessons for students who can't commit to a weekly lesson.
What if I start in the middle of the month?
You will be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days in the month and then you’ll go into our automated system and be billed on the 1st of each month for the upcoming month.
How do I withdraw from lessons?
To withdraw from lessons, you must give 30 days advance notice by filling out our online exit form. This is the only way to withdraw. Contact us for the exit form.
What curriculum does Musicologie use?
We know that you'll stay more engaged by learning music you love and you'll grow faster by using what you've learned in your lessons in performances. We'll take our own Musicologie Method, along with traditional method books like Suzuki, Alfred's, Faber, etc., and combine that with contemporary music you're excited about with the goal of performing in one of our ensembles, group classes, or at one of our concerts.
Do I need my own instrument?
Not for your first lesson. We have instruments at our studios you can use for the first few lessons. But after that you'll want to get your own instrument for practice at home. Your teacher will help you pick out the right one. We also have open practice hours so you can come in and use instruments and practice rooms at Musicologie during the week.
If you do have your own instrument, you should definitely bring it with you, as long as it's easily portable - leave your piano and drums at home
What's an Assessment lesson?
An assessment lesson is what we call your first lesson. Don't worry, it's not a test! You'll come in, meet your teacher, talk about your goals, go through our policies and develop an individual curriculum. Every student does it regardless of age or ability. For very young students, an assessment is also a chance to see if they're ready for private lessons.

Can I reschedule a lesson if I can't come?
Of course! Here's how it works:
Log into your account at Musicologie.com
Find the lesson you want to change and select 'cancel' or 'reschedule' at least 24 hours before the lesson. Musicologie Junior and Accelerated Labs can be canceled or rescheduled up to 30 minutes before the class.
The canceled lesson will remain in your account to reschedule at any point in the future.
If you withdraw from lessons, you can no longer reschedule any lessons you cancelled.
If you re-enroll, any previously cancelled lessons will still be available in your account.
How do I pay for lessons?
When you sign up for lessons, your credit card or debit card will be automatically debited a flat fee each month on the 1st of the month. To withdraw, you need to provide us with 30-days notice by filling out a withdrawal form. Contact your teacher for the form.
Does Musicologie offer refunds?
Musicologie cannot offer refunds for any missed or unused lessons.

Patrick began playing piano at four, violin at nine, and took voice lessons throughout high school and college. After graduating from Otterbein University with a BFA in Musical Theatre, he moved to NYC to pursue the big city dream. After three years, Patrick moved back to Columbus to lay roots in a more comfortable, but just as creatively accessible and inviting environment. He works as an accompanist, performs with several local theater companies, and teaches voice and piano lessons. As a teacher, Patrick approaches learning through the lens of storytelling and acting, and loves to work with students of all ages and abilities. Making lessons fun, engaging, and enjoyable even when music gets tough is Patrick’s core teaching philosophy.

Bonnie Wu got her first violin when she was only three years old and is well versed in the Suzuki method. Along with violin, she also studied piano and later picked up the ukulele. Bonnie now plays violin for Ohio State’s Campus Orchestra while studying for a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and Chinese, with hopes of going to medical or graduate school. For many years, she has volunteered at her local library where she enjoyed working with kids and seeing them in an environment where they wanted to learn. I am a professional gigging musician, gigging throughout central Ohio with The Blue Jays Jazz And Funk Band. Since 2018, I've served as their drummer and main vocalist. To summarize my teaching, I always strive to cultivate student discovery, creativity, and above all, love and passion for their instrument! Lastly, I will not only aid my students in growing their musicianship, but will help them grow and mature as individuals as well!
