Guitar Lessons

Musicologie® is how modern music education should be. Take guitar lessons in person at our Scottsdale studio or online with an expert Musicologie Scottsdale teacher. All ages and abilities.

Start with the music you love

At Musicologie Scottsdale, guitar lessons begin with what you want to play. If you’re a beginner learning your first open chords, a 10-year-old strumming acoustic versions of Billie Eilish songs, or an adult dusting off your electric guitar after years away, your lessons are built around your goals. From day one, you and your teacher will choose your favorite songs to build real technique, like clean chord transitions, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and reading guitar tab or standard notation.

Learn with a certified, working musician

A great player isn’t automatically a great teacher, which is why every instructor completes our Musicologie Teacher Certification. Families and adult learners across Scottsdale love our guitar teachers because they are active performers, songwriters, and recording musicians in Arizona who know how to break down tricky skills into manageable steps. If you’re just starting out, they’ll help you find a comfortable posture, tune your instrument, and build those all-important fingertip calluses. If you already have the basics down, you can dig into barre chords, phrasing, fretboard theory, lead guitar solos, or songwriting.

Explore your gear, find your sound

Our guitar teachers cover everything from rock, pop, and indie to folk, blues, jazz, and classical. Because your sound is part of what makes playing fun, your teacher can also help you make sense of your gear, from choosing the right guitar size and string gauge to dialing in your amp settings or experimenting with essential guitar pedals for beginners like overdrive, delay, reverb, and loop pedals.

Practice that feels like making music

Progress happens between lessons, too, and your teacher will make sure you leave each week knowing what to work on at home without feeling overwhelmed. Instead of endless mechanical drills, you’ll get practical electric and acoustic guitar practice tips, like turning a tough picking exercise into a riff you enjoy playing, or slowing down a tricky solo section until it clicks. Whether you want to strum around a campfire, write your own songs, or play on stage with a band in Musicologie RockStars, we’ll help you get there.

Lessons are in-person at the Scottsdale studio at 7000 E Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, Arizona 85254, United States or online over video. We call the first lesson an assessment. But don't worry, it's not a test! It's a chance for us to get to know you, what your goals are and how best to help you achieve what you want. Plus it's a chance for you to get to know us!

Our Studio

At the studio, you'll meet our Community Manager and your teacher who will guide you through the process. You'll receive a welcome folder with prices and policies, a practice guide and a practice log. You'll spend about 30 minutes talking to your teacher about your goals, playing your guitar, and learning about Musicologie. Your teacher will recommend a curriculum for you and help you sign up for ongoing lessons. You can choose from 30, 45 or 60 minute private lessons. You can also join a band through our RockStars® program. Then, start practicing!

Our Philosophy Of Education

We are driven by a set of unifying principles that guide every lesson, every class, and every interaction.

We Start Early

Research shows the earlier you start, the more lifetime benefits you receive from studying music.

We Teach Life Skills

Music is awesome! It teaches so many things: emotional intelligence, discipline, self-awareness, motor skills, dexterity and more.

We Teach the Process of Learning

We focus on the process rather than the product, facilitating discovery rather than dictating information. We teach how to learn, not just what to learn.

Our Responsibility

We know a student's success is our responsibility. It's our job to make lessons engaging, fun, and easy to be excited about.

We Believe in Immersion + Exploration

All our lessons and classes are experiential and immersive, fun and exciting!

We Assume Good Intentions

We grow the trust, mutual respect and confidence of our students by assuming good intentions from everyone.

We Encourage Mistakes

Making mistakes is what learning is. You try something, make mistakes, and try again. We encourage mistakes so our students are excited to take risks and try new things.

Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to have total confidence that Musicologie Scottsdale is the right place for you or your child to start, or continue your musical journey. So we've collected the most frequently asked questions about our music lessons, our programs, and what it's like learning music at Musicologie.

What is the Musicologie Method™?

The Musicologie Method is at the core of every lesson and class we teach. It’s rooted in two things: a safe environment, and student-centered learning. Research tells us these two elements are key components of the way everyone learns, from kids through adults.

In music lessons, a Safe Environment means a place where you feel free to be who you are, encouraged to play the music you enjoy, and excited to try new things.

Student-Centered Learning means harnessing trust, collaboration, and exploration to give students the agency and the inspiration to achieve their goals and to make the learning process engaging and fun.

What ages does Musicologie teach?

We teach all ages. Many of our students are between the ages of 5 and 12, but we teach toddlers and we teach many adults, too! Our toddler music class is called Musicologie Junior and starts at 6 months. Private lessons start at 5. We also have a rock band class called Rockstars where students ages 7+ learn to be rock stars and play at local venues!

We also have member workshops, open mics, and concerts for all our students, including adults! At Musicologie Scottsdale, not only can you learn an instrument from an amazing, friendly, certified teacher, but you can meet other musicians and join a community of music explorers!

How do I sign up for lessons?

Get started here by answering a few questions. We'll match you with a teacher and find a time that works for ongoing lessons. The first lesson is called an assessment lesson.

What's a lesson membership?

A lesson membership is how you sign up for your weekly lesson or class at Musicologie. Your membership fee is billed monthly. The price depends on which lessons or classes you're enrolled in.

Can I do lessons every other week?

Sure, we offer drop-in lessons for students who can't commit to a weekly lesson.

What if I start in the middle of the month?

You will be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days in the month and then you’ll go into our automated system and be billed on the 1st of each month for the upcoming month.

How do I withdraw from lessons?

To withdraw from lessons, you must give 30 days advance notice by filling out our online exit form. This is the only way to withdraw. Contact us for the exit form.

What curriculum does Musicologie use?

We know that you'll stay more engaged by learning music you love and you'll grow faster by using what you've learned in your lessons in performances. We'll take our own Musicologie Method, along with traditional method books like Suzuki, Alfred's, Faber, etc., and combine that with contemporary music you're excited about with the goal of performing in one of our ensembles, group classes, or at one of our concerts.

Do I need my own instrument?

Not for your first lesson. We have instruments at our studios you can use for the first few lessons. But after that you'll want to get your own instrument for practice at home. Your teacher will help you pick out the right one. We also have open practice hours so you can come in and use instruments and practice rooms at Musicologie during the week.

If you do have your own instrument, you should definitely bring it with you, as long as it's easily portable - leave your piano and drums at home

What's an Assessment lesson?

An assessment lesson is what we call your first lesson. Don't worry, it's not a test! You'll come in, meet your teacher, talk about your goals, go through our policies and develop an individual curriculum. Every student does it regardless of age or ability. For very young students, an assessment is also a chance to see if they're ready for private lessons.

What are Musicologie's prices?

Each of our studios may have different prices, so get started here to learn more!

Can I reschedule a lesson if I can't come?

Of course! Here's how it works:

  1. Log into your account at Musicologie.com

  2. Find the lesson you want to change and select 'cancel' or 'reschedule' at least 24 hours before the lesson. Musicologie Junior and Accelerated Labs can be canceled or rescheduled up to 30 minutes before the class.

  3. The canceled lesson will remain in your account to reschedule at any point in the future.

  4. If you withdraw from lessons, you can no longer reschedule any lessons you cancelled.

  5. If you re-enroll, any previously cancelled lessons will still be available in your account.

How do I pay for lessons?

When you sign up for lessons, your credit card or debit card will be automatically debited a flat fee each month on the 1st of the month. To withdraw, you need to provide us with 30-days notice by filling out a withdrawal form. Contact your teacher for the form.

Does Musicologie offer refunds?

Musicologie cannot offer refunds for any missed or unused lessons.
