How Piano Lessons Work
At Musicologie Anderson, most of what we do is private lessons and piano is one of our main focuses. The piano is an amazing, magical instrument. It’s the perfect place for most students to start. Piano teaches technique and dexterity, theory and note reading, and provides a simple, linear road map of how music works. Once you have that foundation, you can take it anywhere: from impressive classical pieces, to your favorite pop song, to adding another instrument to your resume. Piano lessons are absolutely the best way for every music lover to immerse themselves in music.
How old does my child need to be for piano lessons?
We have a rule of thumb: If your child is excited about playing music now, they should start now. Most piano students can start as young as four years old. For kids younger than four who are excited about music, we have Musicologie Junior. Many of our teachers specialize in early childhood music education. They have the skills, patience and demeanor to help young students grow.
What about adult beginners?
Yes! We love adults who are up for the challenge of learning to play a instrument. It's hard work but so rewarding. And it won't take as long as you think to be able to play your favorite songs! We'll help guide you towards your goals and won't make you do endless scales or theory exercises if that's not what you're into.
Lessons For Experienced Piano Players
What about lessons for experienced piano players? If you have played before, you probably have a good idea of what you want to work on. We'll match you with one of our advanced piano teachers. Some have doctorates and decades of experience teaching at the collegiate level. Some have masters degrees in piano pedagogy or have toured professionally as jazz sidemen. We offer a world-class, university level piano education.

Your First Piano Lesson at Musicologie Anderson
The first step is to attend your first piano lesson. You can sign up online, or contact us at 513-620-4923. You can attend your lesson online over video, or in person at the Anderson studio at 7120 Dunn Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45230. We call the first lesson an assessment. But don't worry - it's not a test! It's a chance for us to get to know you, what your goals are and how best to help you achieve what you want. Plus it's a chance for you to get to know us!
Our Studio
At the studio you'll meet our Community Manager and your teacher who will guide you through process. You'll receive a welcome folder with prices and policies, a practice guide and a practice log. You'll spend about 30 minutes getting set up, learning about Musicologie, talking to you teacher about your goals and playing your piano. Your teacher will recommend a curriculum for you, and then, you'll sign up for ongoing voice lessons. You can choose from 30, 45 or 60 minute private lessons. You can also join a band through our RockStars® program. Then, start practicing!

We just had our daughter’s first music lesson at Musicologie, and we couldn’t be more impressed! Her instructor, William, was absolutely amazing so patient, kind, and engaging. He made her feel completely at ease and turned her very first experience with music lessons into something fun and exciting. It was such a joy to watch her light up with confidence and curiosity! The facility itself is fantastic professional, welcoming, and full of creative energy. It’s a really cool space that sets the perfect tone for learning and exploring music. I have had an amazing journey learning guitar with Jeremy. As an adult I was worried my 30 years of plunking out the same 3 chords would mean that I would struggle. Jeremy listened to what I wanted to achieve, and then helped me to learn and grow at my own speed. He was creative, encouraging, and always pushed just hard enough to help me get over those inevitable humps in muscle memory learning. If you would like your child to accelerate in their music abilities, they would benefit with Musicology. Watching how our son accelerated so quickly with the extremely talented instructors is amazing. They are patient, kind, and communicate well. For us, communication is very important and you don't often get this in group settings

We are so happy to be starting lessons here and my children were thrilled with their first experience. They were so accommodating. The owner was such a sweetheart when she worked really hard to make our lesson time work so my son could take violin lessons. There aren't very many places that would do that much for their customers. The place is very clean and the parking is simple. I like the atmosphere and cannot wait to continue here and see what the future holds. Everyone has been so nice.

What is the Musicologie Method™?
The Musicologie Method™ is rooted in two things: a safe environment, and education through play. Research tells us these two elements are key components of the way everyone learns, from kids through adults.
In music lessons, a safe environment means a place where you feel free to be who you are, encouraged to play the music you enjoy, and excited to try new things. Education through play means having fun playing your instrument! That's why it's called playing music! We use games and strategies to help our music students make serious progress while enjoying the process.
What ages does Musicologie teach?
We teach all ages. Many of our students are between the ages of 5 and 12, but we teach toddlers and we teach many adults, too! Our toddler music class is called Musicologie Junior and starts at 6 months. Private lessons start at 5. We also have a rock band class called Rockstars where students ages 7+ learn to be rock stars and play at local venues!
We also have member workshops, open mics, and concerts for all our students, including adults! At Musicologie Anderson, not only can you learn an instrument from an amazing, friendly, certified teacher, but you can meet other musicians and join a community of music explorers!
How do I sign up for lessons?
Get started here by answering a few questions. We'll match you with a teacher and find a time that works for ongoing lessons. The first lesson is called an assessment lesson.
What's a lesson membership?
A lesson membership is how you sign up for your weekly lesson or class at Musicologie. Your membership fee is billed monthly. The price depends on which lessons or classes you're enrolled in.
Can I do lessons every other week?
Sure, we offer drop-in lessons for students who can't commit to a weekly lesson.
What if I start in the middle of the month?
You will be charged a prorated amount for the remaining days in the month and then you’ll go into our automated system and be billed on the 1st of each month for the upcoming month.
How do I withdraw from lessons?
To withdraw from lessons, you must give 30 days advance notice by filling out our online exit form. This is the only way to withdraw. Contact us for the exit form.
What curriculum does Musicologie use?
We know that you'll stay more engaged by learning music you love and you'll grow faster by using what you've learned in your lessons in performances. We'll take our own Musicologie Method, along with traditional method books like Suzuki, Alfred's, Faber, etc., and combine that with contemporary music you're excited about with the goal of performing in one of our ensembles, group classes, or at one of our concerts.
Do I need my own instrument?
Not for your first lesson. We have instruments at our studios you can use for the first few lessons. But after that you'll want to get your own instrument for practice at home. Your teacher will help you pick out the right one. We also have open practice hours so you can come in and use instruments and practice rooms at Musicologie during the week.
If you do have your own instrument, you should definitely bring it with you, as long as it's easily portable - leave your piano and drums at home
What's an Assessment lesson?
An assessment lesson is what we call your first lesson. Don't worry, it's not a test! You'll come in, meet your teacher, talk about your goals, go through our policies and develop an individual curriculum. Every student does it regardless of age or ability. For very young students, an assessment is also a chance to see if they're ready for private lessons.

Can I reschedule a lesson if I can't come?
Of course! Here's how it works:
Log into your account at Musicologie.com
Find the lesson you want to change and select 'cancel' or 'reschedule' at least 24 hours before the lesson. Musicologie Junior and Accelerated Labs can be canceled or rescheduled up to 30 minutes before the class.
The canceled lesson will remain in your account to reschedule at any point in the future.
If you withdraw from lessons, you can no longer reschedule any lessons you cancelled.
If you re-enroll, any previously cancelled lessons will still be available in your account.
How do I pay for lessons?
When you sign up for lessons, your credit card or debit card will be automatically debited a flat fee each month on the 1st of the month. To withdraw, you need to provide us with 30-days notice by filling out a withdrawal form. Contact your teacher for the form.
Does Musicologie offer refunds?
Musicologie cannot offer refunds for any missed or unused lessons.

Kristin Agee, Co-Owner of Musicologie in Anderson, has been teaching drums/percussion for over 20 years. Growing up in a musical family, Kristin started performing with her parents cover band at the age of 12. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Music degrees from Ohio University, where she also adjunct taught for the 2012 school year before opening her first private studio in Cincinnati. She is an active free-lance artist, having performed with regional orchestras, musical theater productions and many local original and cover bands. Kristin has been featured in national publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Tom Tom magazine, and her original music has been featured on NPR.

Jeremy Singer has been performing music since 1990. At age 8, he began studying piano and at 12 discovered the guitar. He studied classical guitar and music theory at Cincinnati's School for Creative and Performing Arts and joined an original rock band at 16. After two years at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, Jeremy studied and taught recording arts. In 2006, he began teaching music and has since been inspiring students of all ages to play their favorite styles by teaching the fundamentals using popular songs.

Heather Bulgart teaches piano, saxophone, and Junior at Musicologie Anderson. She previously taught for 3 years at Musicologie Dublin and Westerville, and is so excited to be back! She has a Bachelor of Music Education and is Kodaly Level I certified. Heather also has 3 years of experience teaching elementary music in a public school.
Heather’s teaching philosophy centers around the idea that learning music should be fun! Her lessons focus on music theory and technique, but students will learn through exploration and games in addition to the traditional method books.

Calvin Horner is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a BA degree in voice and a focus in education. He has experience studying and performing various vocal styles from opera to choral to jazz. He also has studied jazz piano with local pianist Dan Karslberg and has used that experience to further his knowledge of improvisation and harmony. Calvin has been teaching voice and piano since graduating in 2017 and has taught students of all ages, abilities, and interests.

Tom Buckley is one of the most in-demand drummers and drum instructors in the Cincinnati area. He has a wide-ranging skill set that allows him to play jazz, funk, rock, pop, classical, and many other styles. He can be heard with his band FLOCKS, The Cincy Brass, The Ben Tweedt Trio, and many others. He has made contributions to several acclaimed recordings including FLOCKS' latest album 'You Were Probably Younger Then,' Dan Karlsberg's 'Tales From the Winter Solstice,' and Brad Myers/Mike Sharfe's 'Sanguinaria.'
He has been teaching private lessons regularly since 2010 and has experience teaching students of all ages. He attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where he received a BM in Jazz Studies.

Diamond Sparks, a mezzo-soprano from Birmingham, Alabama, has notable experience as a chorus member with Cincinnati Opera and Mobile Opera. She performed in roles such as Presendia in Nico Muhly’s "Dark Sisters" and Bianca in Benjamin Britten’s "The Rape of Lucretia" at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). During her undergraduate studies at the University of South Alabama, she portrayed Prince Charmant in "Cendrillon." Diamond has also taught privately, guiding students in discovering their musical talents. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from USA and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from CCM, studying under Dr. Thomas Rowell and Dr. Gwendolyn Coleman.
